Exploring Bangladesh: A Journey to the Heart of Beauty

The objective of the workshop is to help participants broaden their understanding of Bangladesh as a country and foray into aspects of the Bengali culture through lectures and various hands-on activities. By the end of the workshop sessions, participants would have been able to identify and internalize useful aspects of Bengali culture and daily life activities. They would have gained additional knowledge about the Bangladeshi society and her people.  It is also the objective of the session that participants can draw educated conclusions and the appreciate differences and similarities that exist between the Bangladeshi (South Asian) culture and the culture of the USA.

 

Weekly Schedule

Week # 1: Entering Bangladesh 

February 6, 2018

- Self-Introduction, Introduction to the Workshop, Program Requirements

- Background Information about Bangladesh

- Introduction to Bengali Language and literature, Culture and History, Music and Dance. Concluding the session watching a short film. 

Week # 2: Living in Bangladesh 

February 13, 2018

 

 

- Assessment 1 (Group Quiz on Week 1 Topics for 10 Minutes)

- Let’s Speak Bengali: An Introduction to Every Day Conversation in Bengali Language Using Real-life Situations Activities:

      * Dramatization of the Bengali greeting culture

      * Presentation of sample conversation in market places

      * Basic Bangladeshi words for everyday conversation

      * Group presentation (Role play activity on the conversation pattern    discussed). A short film on everyday life in Bangladesh.

Week # 3: Celebrating Festivals

- Assessment 2 (Group Quiz on Week 2 Topics for 10 Minutes)

- Diversified cultural festivals and social ceremonies in Bangladesh:

    *Pahela Boishakh, * Victory day, * Eid-ul-Fitr, * Durga Puja, * Buddha Purnima

    * Christmas, * Muharram, * Rathajatra, * Holi, *Lalan Festival, * Boat Races

    * Wedding, *Funeral, *Coronation*Child naming

- Fashion, Food and Culture of Respect for Elders and Constituted Authorities. Watching a short film on Festivals in Bangladesh.

Week # 4: Exploring Religious Believes and Cultural Diversities

Week # 5: Travelling, Shopping and Enjoying Bangladeshi Cuisines
