Health is a right that is unevenly distributed in the world due to lack of access in underdeveloped countries. Today there are more than one million avoidable child deaths per year, and more than 6 million children still die before their fifth birthday each year. More than half of these early child deaths are due to conditions that could be prevented or treated with access to simple, affordable interventions.  An integration of study abroad clinical rotations in an underdeveloped country in our pediatrics course would provide an ideal setting and experiential learning for students as they provide primary health education, prevention, and delivery of care to pediatric patients and their families while understanding the global barriers to health as well as emphasizing cultural competency in healthcare.

During summer II 2019, Nursing students will be enrolled in NURS 360 (Pediatric Nursing), its accompanying clinical course, NURS 360L as well as a 1 credit NURS 401 Research Seminar course.  The School of Nursing will offer a few sections of the existing NURS 360L courses as study abroad courses to occur for eight days at the end of Summer II and extending after the term concludes in the Dominican Republic with the same course objectives plus an emphasis on global health.  Exact dates to be determined, but generally in the July 29-August 6 time frame.

Eligibility - Pre-licensure Nursing students who have successfully completed AHI or AHII prior to Summer II and meet the FSU criteria for eligibility (see application).

Cost includes airfare, land/water transportation, full time field director, entrance costs for all required sites and activities, breakfasts, lunches, most dinners, accommodations and required international travel insurance.

Cost $3300.00 if non-refundable $200 deposit is paid by October 15.

Cost $3500.00 if non-refundable $200 deposit is paid after October 15.

Participants will be required to pay $1000 toward the cost of travel in the spring  ($200/month due by the 15th of January, February, March, April, and May).

The remaining balance will be assigned to the Summer II student bill for classes.

Students will participate in a 1-credit GLBL 300 prep class throughout the spring of 2019.

Students approved to participate will receive an FSU Extraordinary Experience tuition award for Summer II.

Students with extenuating circumstances requiring cancellation can appeal for partial refunds.  Refunds can only be provided for refundable portions of the cost that the university has not already paid.
