APSI Calculus AB

The AP Calculus AB course will encompass a review of most topics in the curriculum, including limits, derivatives, theorems, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, integrals, and separable differential equations. Applications of derivatives will include derivative graphing, implicit differentiation, related rates, and optimization.  Applications of integrals will include substitution, area, volume, and particle motion.

The Course and Exam Description and the Mathematical Practices adopted for the 2016-2017 school year will be examined at length and incorporated throughout the week.  New topics to the curriculum will be discussed in detail. Trends in the AP Exam over the last several years will be discussed and applied to the calculus concepts, and perspectives on how readers assess different types of questions will further these analyses.

Discussions will also be held concerning structure of the class, forms of assessment, and AP Exam review.  Participants will be provided numerous resources and classroom materials as well as multiple levels of instructional strategies.  Workshop instruction will be enhanced by group work, discussions, and activities.

The institute will be led by Lisa Putnam who teaches AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC at the Career Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  She has taught high school mathematics for 25 years, and has had her National Board Certification (AYA Mathematics) since 2001.

Mrs. Putnam has been a reader for the AP Calculus exam since 2010, and she has been an AP consultant for College Board since 2012. She has taught weeklong and one-day AP Calculus workshops in most of the Southern states, as well as New York, Illinois and Seoul (South Korea).
